PAINTING

“Saturday Mornings”

My artwork is a nostalgic exploration of the cartoons that I watched on Saturday mornings.  While the work incorporates the playful characters of the 80s and earlier, the artwork hints at the serious cultural and social undertones that are either implied in the cartoons or surrounding them.  The paintings are not a commentary on any singular cartoon or event, but instead are pop art collages of many contentious concepts surrounding older cartoons and their societal implications. The themes are sometimes very direct, but also can be camouflaged physically in layers of painting, drawings, patterns, and abstract shapes. My intention is not to demonize or shame the cartoons that I fondly remember, but, rather, to unpack their content as an adult in a colorful way.
